200 sx wont start........maybe the starter??

My friend has a 1995 200sx and it wont start. I got her battery checked and that wasnt it, so I'm pretty sure its the starter, all the dash lights come on when the key is turned but there is no response when turning the key. So thats what made me think it was either the battery or starter. I was just wondering if anyone has changed a starter on one of these and how hard it is. I have limited tools besides my socket set, since I'm at school. Just wondering if you guys think this is the problem and if I'm gonna have enough tools with my 200 piece set. Its my first time working a Nissan too, so if someone could tell me where the starter is located and how hard it is to get to that would be awesome.Oh yeah, can you bring in a starter to get tested to see if its bad. Thanks for any help.

Matt

on a FWD nissan the starter is usually located on the driver side of the engine (if you're facing the front of the car) its right next to the transmission (on the rear of the engine) the bolts to remove it are located on the transmission side remove those to take off the starter and just replace it...chances are it'll be a 15 maybe a 14 so i believe a 200 pc. might be able to do it.

[sm=exactly.gif]. it could be the starter. u can always take 2 autozone 2 get it checked and for free. and if the starter is good then check the alternator.

Hope you have fixed it by now.
If not, don't forget the battery terminals. If corroded they will not be able to allow sufficent amps to turn the starter motor. This will seam like the starter is bad but it may not be. All the electrical stuff in the car will work fine untill you turn the key to start. All the stuff will turn off like the starter is shorting out and then come back on when the key is released from the start position. Clean the battery posts and terminals first and check the terminals for brakes in the metal. Two replacement terminals are less than $10 at autopart stores.

Always start trouble shooting with the least expensive parts. To many people, garages included, want to replace all the expensive parts first. Gamble on the cheep stuff first if you are not sure. I have seen batteries replaced when it was a battery cable, alternator replaced when it was a dead cell in a battery etc.

Good luck.
Pete
