“Big Brother” Keeps Florida Man from Buying GT-R

Most people are familiar with the “black box” found in aircraft, which are often used to check system levels and other specs during a plane crash, and a similar system has been in use for some time in various models. The American government is mandating that by the end of 2012, all new models are equipped with the Electric Data Recorder technology, and this system can tell someone afterwards basic items like the speed at which airbags open, speed recall, mileage, etc. Even with the system not being required for a few more years, Nissan has decided to equip the GT-Rs with this data recording technology. While it is intended to be a security measure, many consumers consider this an invasion of their privacy, and the concern of Nissan using the data to refuse warranty issues, although Nissan insists that information would only be used by the authorities to determine issues like accidents during street racing.

Based on this assume invasion or privacy, one Florida lawyer has gone so far as to cancel his order for a 2009 GT-R, claiming that the addition of the black box is his reason for changing his mind. The GT-Rs black box monitors and records driving activities of a few days worth of driving, and that memory may prove to be a deterrent for those who want to drive their new GT-R hard, but with the government mandate approaching, there is little that can be done about the device.

That sucks. I'm sure someone will develop a systems to intercept the readings and feed the blackbox muted readings. Hopefully they'll start practicing on the GT-R :)
