Default check engine light 1997 maxima

The check engine light has been coming on periodically for the past year. I have 167,000 miles on the car. Had the EGR valve replaced once, cleaned once, and the last time I brought it in they said the knock sensor wasn't working and the EGR valve wasn't either. The car's exhaust is rich but it seems to be running fine. Is it okay to run the car with the engine light on? We would be traveling no more than 20 miles to and from work. I have had this car 11 years and really love it.

THe engine light went off today. It had been on for about two days. Anyone have any idea what is going on? I have had emissions problems with the car for about a year and had the EGR valve replaced, carbon cleaned once. The last time I was at the shop they reset the light but my battery was corroded and they told me that maybe that was the cause for the engine light. It was off for about two months and then was on for two days and is off again?

Stop taking your car to the same people.... if your check engine light is on they should be able to diag your car. You have some kind of problem that is not setting a hard code for the light to be coming off.... did they give you a print out with the code?
