Check engine light

Check engine light
I have a '96 Pathfinder. The "check engine" light came on when I accelerated to pass a car. The owner's manual says to take it in to have it checked. Is there a way to reset it without taking to a dealer?

RE: Check engine light
while there may be a way to reset it, it will only come back on...on vehicles 95 and newer, a check engine light signifies an issue with the emissions control system, so even if you do clear the codes, it will likely kick back on....do you live in the US? if so, some parts stores like pep boys, or autozone have OBDII scanners that will tell you why its on, and its ususally free.

RE: Check engine light
i have a 99 maxima, in my service manual there is a full list of all the codes and how to get them out of the computer. on my car the is alittle screw on the side of the ECU that you can turn and the check engine light will flash out what code is there, if you turn the same screew again the computer will be cleared. i would expect that there would be a simmilar process on the pathfinder. and no this light is not only for the emissions, this light would come on if any engine sensor is not working corectly. for example if you car just missed(which is normal for higher mileage cars) the light could come on, and a simple reset can fix it. after you clear the computer if the light comes on again you could have a more serious problem and you sould get it checked out. But if i were you i would just go and buy the service manual at any autoparts store and it should tell you how to clear your pathfinder. good luck
