nissa almera heater control cable issue

Hello , I have a 2002 Nissan Almera 1.8 Petrol , The heater temperature control is not responding , this is not a resistor issue. I have taken a small part of console off and can see that the cable is still attatched by its clip and it is not the cowling that has become seperated. This is what is happening , the wire is not returning into the cowling , the wire pulls out of the surrounding when you turn the dial , but when you turn the dial to cold the wire loops and doesnt push back in , however you can push in back in manually ,someone suggested greasing the part of the wire that is looping to see if it will slide back into the cowling , I will try this , can anybody suggest anything else in case this is unsuccesful , dont really want to take whole dash off. Thanks.
