nissan patrol 1998 2.8 gr slx

Just bought my first Nissan, drives brilliant but is very difficult to start and when it does it coughs huge clouds of black smoke, it also does this when accelerating, the car has done 112,000mls with history.
Any ideas of what to try and fix first?
