Recall while living overseas?

Recall while living overseas?
Hello,
Does anyone have experience with having a recall repaired while living overseas?
I have a 2002 Altima and I'm currently living in Germany (hubby's in the military). The German Nissan dealer told me that I need to call the dealer in the US where I bought the car, that they should mail the parts to me at no cost, then the German service dept will be able to do the repairs. They said this is the only way they will get reimbursed by Nissan for the labor, and since it is a US spec car, they do not have the parts here.
This sounds a little fishy to me-- is my US dealer going to laugh at me if I call and tell them this? Anyone ever try to get a recall done to a US spec car while in Europe?
Thanks for your help.
