Default Speedo not working on 100nx

Hey peeps, could really do with your help. My friend has a 100nx, and I used to own one although mine was problem free! Her speedo has stopped working so she took it to a garage (to get ripped off) they said they have ordered the part to fix it but they cannot undo something because two pieces of metal have been screwed together too tightly for them to undo. They want to charge her for the part even though they are unable to fix it because it was specially ordered in. I think this is obsurd because she has taken it there in good faith to be fixed. They also reckon that they are going to have to interfere with the gear box to fix it. Cost around £300 for the part (or perhaps for interfering with the box - she could be getting confused as to what the £300 is for either box or part but she says part.) So, what part could seriously cost this much to fix speedo. I am aware of the tension that the speedo arms are on with the spring but is this so difficult to fix??

Has anyone else had their speedo break, have you fixed, how and what part was needed etc....???

Thank you so much in advance for your help

It's possible that the gear that drives the cable for the speedo (inside the tranny) is damaged. If it is, it could be expensive to repair.
