Changing timing chain on 2000 Altima- major job?

My 2000 Altima has about 120k on it and I'm looking at getting the timing chain replaced. There wasn't a recommended replacement mileage in the owners manual so is this about when I should get it replaced?

Does anyone know about how much labor is involved in replacing the chain and gears?

That timing chain will pretty much last you the life of the car or at least 200k miles. That's what's so good about timing chains, vs. timiing belts!

the lifetime depends on the timing chain... i changed mine at 130k and it cost me 2 400$ because he had to replace the whole side of the engine. actually i didn't replace it when i should've done it... it failed before...

well, i was working 6 days a week, 10 hours a day. my days off were sundays so i couldn't bring it to the garage. i heard the sound (like a loose bearing) and i couldn't figure what was the nature of that scary sound. i changed the alternator, it didn't solve it. one lucky day, i was back from Laval (a city in quebec at like 50 km from my home town) and when a tryed to restart the car (in my drive way) it just didn't work. i then had the idea to start it on the on the compression (manual), it didn't work. i brought it to the garage and used my father's car. they told me, after inspecting it, that my timing chain broke in thousands of pieces breaking the whole left part of the engine, wich is the cover of the timing chain. 2.4k$ later it's fine but had to do some minor reparations... that's it! hope u didn't fall asleep during my never ending story...

Well, looks like my timing chain broke this Sunday - just finished getting the head resurfaced, didn't change chain because the engine was supposed to have been overhauled 30-40k miles ago. Sitting in driveway idling, engine died - wouldn't start. Checked, no spark, thought great, bad distributor - no such luck, the cams aren't even turning!!! Haven't taken the valve covers off yet to make sure. Hope the valves are OK!!

you dont have to replace the chain until the the timing chain assembly starts to make noise. it will last as long as the car with no problem. i had ove 140k on my sentras chain and it still going with out a problem with the new owner. so dont worry about it, thats why nissan has timing chains instead of belts so they last longer.

My altima 2002 make noice near the timing belt cover every morning when you start the engine. The noice getting more often for the last six month. you don't hear the noise after you used the car during the day. Mileage only 60K +

Any advice to fix the noice?

Thank's
