Nissan Frontier This mid sized truck offers the advantages of the full sized Titan with its large bed and great off roading ability, but with a smaller, more efficient engine.

yo, i also got a 98 frontier with the same problem, my check engine light comes on and goes off every 500 miles becaues of the EGR system, the nissan dealer ship replaced my entire EGR system, and it still does that! the nissan dealership tells me its because I have a header on my truck, and its a 4 cyl. something about the back pressure is messing up the computers readings! they tell me to get a factory manifold, but i got about 15 hp. out of my header and i cracked my factory manifold off-roadin! i need that power cause im runnin 33" tires, so i say **** it, but i want to ask you, have you changed your factory manifold, cause if you havent then im goin back to the dealership to tell them to guess again! haha

p.s. they charged me less than $300 to replace the entire system, if thats your problem, just replace it, dont worry about cleanin ****!

I have the 98 Frontier with the 4 banger and also have the same issue. I have noticed mine only comes on when it is raining/snowing/or real humid outside. It sputters and occasionaly back fires but I quit worring about it a long time ago. The shop that works on my truck says the distributor cap seems to let water in and that causes the motor to do the funky chicken. They dry out the cap and seal it with some silicon but it always comes back sooner or later. It doesn't seem to affect the MPG or the overall performance so I just ignore it and it goes away after a day or two. I took it to the dealer once or twice and they just want to swap out parts and charge you $$$$. The truck is almost 10 years old, has a 150,000 miles on it and have never really spent a dime on it. Great truck, although it looks like hell from age and hail it still runs great. Doesn't leak a drop of oil and has no rattles in the interior.

I haven't washed it in 3 years, I figure it isn't worth the money at this point.

Interesting thing, my exhaust manifold is also cracked but it isn't worth fixing at this point.

I doubt any American 4x4 truck with a 4 banger would be maintenance free after 9+ years and 150,000 miles.

My 98 also has THE light from the EGR, had it all replaced, the light stayed off 4 months and has been on for the last 6 years. I also replaced the broken manifold with no change. I don't ck the mileage so I can't tell, but I get about 280 miles to a tank. It has been a great truck with very little above average maint. I have 150K, 2 accidents and still trucking like the day I bought it new.
