Knock sensor modified?

I have removed my knock sensor connector and have found a mystery. As you can see in the pictures, there are 2 wires going in and only one out. On the connector into the knock sensor, there is only one metal 'clip' in the connector. Has this connector been altered?

thanx, saltykayak

RE: Knock sensor modified?

I dont think so, looks like my KS -wire.

Any sensor needs minimum 2wires, here KS 'other wire' is utilizing ground (engine). Computer will get ground 'signal' if/when pre-detonation causes knock vibrations to change KS resistance.

There may also be available Knock Sensors with two wires (?) if/when the piezo elements are shielded (floating) and dont touch ground. This would be better way, but cost some cents more...

Typically wiring sets contain more wires than needed, easier for mfg to master different versions. Under your dash you'll find lots connectors, unused. Theyre used on features on other models. Decades ago, when features were scarce, on some cars one might get deluxe version just by connectin some free-hanging connectors under dash...
