Need help on how to remove radio controls from Maxima Steering Wheel

My radio control buttons on the left side of my 01 Maxima Steering Wheel have gone bad. Press 5 times and they eventually change stations.

I ordered another one (with proper color) from Nissan.

How do I remove the current one from the steering wheel?

I see there is a screw below the control on the steering column but not sure if that is related to removing this unit. Perhaps it pulls out.

Would like some friendly advice b4 I try it out.

Nissan could not tell me when asked.

Thanks
Peter

Radio/Steering wheel, refer to FSM section RS-20, EL-180, instr panel BT-32 and/or ST-10.

Whatever, pls make sure u know what youre doing not to excite THE airbag bomb on the steering wheel.

Excerpts from the manual ... to get there, follow the links via link at bottom.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ST-10

"Removal and Installation STEERING WHEEL Remove air bag module and spiral cable.
Refer to RS-20, “Removal—Air Bag Module and Spiral Cable”.

RS
"WARNING:
I To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance should be performed
by an authorized NISSAN dealer.
I Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system.
I Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow harness connector.
PRECAUTION FOR SEAT BELT SERVICE
CAUTION:
I Before removing the seat belt pre-tensioner assembly, turn the ignition switch off, disconnect the
battery ground cable and wait at least 3 minutes."

Some news articles:

.
...at the random sample of all accidents, ... airbags are associated with increased risk of death. ...evidence shows that airbags do more harm than good.

UGA statistics professor Mary C. Meyer: "new analysis of existing data indicates that, ... airbags ... increased probability of death in accidents."

Airbag fumes; http://www.airbaginjury.com/airbag_fumes.htm

Automobile airbags use a chemical compound that is so toxic that even small amounts can kill. Yet trucks loaded with hundreds of pounds of sodium azide routinely travel the nation's highways, and discarded airbags sit like environmental time bombs in the nation's auto junkyards, a University of Arizona scientist says.
