Rebuild or Replace tranny?
The reverse in my 96 maxima is gone, most of the repair shops I've talked to say I need to rebuild or replace the transmission. It's an automatic. Does anyone know why the reverse went out and or how to fix it? If I do need to replace it, how hard would it be to convert it to a manual?

RE: Rebuild or Replace tranny?
Thats actually a good question. Lemme know how that turns out. I know one thing, manual will give you
way more gas mileage and torque. I have a 97 Auto right now. All I know is the tranny on the 97-99 or even 95-99 are a tricky make. Something about the engine having too much power for the tranny to optimize. I dunno. Just what I heard. |
RE: Rebuild or Replace tranny?
Dear Trans Problem Person:
I have a 1990 and had a shop rebuild the trans just this past January, it was great and seems great even now except it seems to be starting with some kind of bounch of skipping, it is hard to describe, and it may not be the trans at all. But it cost about 1,900.00 to rebuild and they only warranty it for about 6 months. If they installed a brand new one the cost would have been almost $4,000.00. THe new trans would have come with a longer warranty, at least 12 months. But remember that does not say your torque converter is good either and maybe think about repalcing it at the same time, just in case. I think my converter may be going, which means the trans must come back out. Let us know what you decide! gschall |
