97 Sentra starting problem

Well, this car has over 100,000 miles on it and had this problem for at least 3 years. When the engine is cold, it is really hard to start it. This morning with freezing temetures outside, it took me at least 2 minuts to get it running. Had to apply gas in order to get the car started. About two months age, the starter stoped working and had to get a new one. I believe it was because of the starting problem.Does anyone have an idea what could be the reason for it? And is it normal for Sentras to heat up very slowly? The temerature mark is only a little bit above the COLD line, not like in other vehicles where it is at 9 o'clock position between the HOT and COLD mark. It got my attention because the heating is not that strong and also has a bad, smoke likesmell coming out of it.Please help me out, Thanks.
