AXLE MYSTERY

Sentra 92 SE, 1.6 engine.
The right side axle pulled out of the outer CV joint while doing a slow right turn into a parking space. See picture. There is no damage to the steering or suspension components that normally hold the axle connected to CV joint. The grease is clean, so the boot probably broke after the axle pulled out.
Any clues?

my guess would be that the clip or pin that holds it in place broke.
