Problem with shifter

Hey all,

I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE 4 cylinder automatic, and am having a problem with the shifter. I just got the car in September from a relative, after it had been sitting for a fair bit of time. She told me it had only had this problem since then!

Okay, so the problem is shifting from park after I apply the brake. Basically I apply the brake and have to wait anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes (3 minutes is the most it has taken) to shift from park to reverse, drive, etc! This is really annoying! 90% of the time it takes at least a minute before I can move it.

So I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and how much it cost to fix it, or do you at least have an idea of what the problem is/ could be?

Thank you for you help.

Sounds like the park position switch.... I have sold quite a few of them for that car.

Thank you very much!

My dad usually fixes problems with our vehicles and just wondering if this would be something he could fix? He's not a certified mechanic but has been working on cars all his life... Is this usually a hard job or an easy fix? How much does this part cost (i know you're from the US, but still curious)?

Thanks again for your help!

If he has been working on cars all his life, he should have no problem with this repair...... the part retails at nearly $112.... I could sell it to you for about $79 plus shipping.
