replacing crank seal

I have just purchased a 1993 Nissan Sentra with a 1.6 litre dohc for my daughter. My question, there is an oil leak on or near the front cover, am not sure whether it is a gasket or seal. the only thing i can find on this board is maybe it is the crank seal, what is the way to replace these? Has anyone replaced these themselves? Thanks.

RE: replacing crank seal

well i had to replace the crank seal but also on the 1.6L the timing chain cover likes to leak to the only way your going to find out wich one it is. you have to clean the area with brake cleaner and then add some oil dye you can buy at any part store and then drive it for a day or two and then take a black light or anything that would show the flouressant dye and it would tell you exactly where its leaking from. the crank seal is about a good 1 hour job max but the timing cover is a bit more time consuming. do this before you start throwing parts at it so it would save time.

What do you mean by front cover? Valve cover or are you refering to the timing cover?
