shifter can not go out of park when engine is on

I turn on my 2002 sentra and sometimes the shifter remains locked in park and I have to take it out of park by pressing the manual unlock button, why?

if you listen when you press the brake pedal with the car in park you should hear a small click/pop sound from the shifter console, if you dont hear that then your brake switch needs to be adjusted

or your brake switch is defective its located under the dash by the upper part of the brake pedal arm
