Default dirty sensors

I have a 2001 Nissan Xterra and have had problems with dirty sensors, which I have had to have cleaned twice. Having dirty sensors caused my thermostat to read hot when in fact my car was not hot. This problem also caused my service engine light to come on as well. It seems my car's thermostat is reading hot once again and I believe it is due to the sensors being dirty because, the temperature reading is not consistently hot but moves from hot to cold....gradually.

My questions is...how do I get to the sensors myself to clean them? I would rather clean them myself without having to take it in again. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

TS
