Default does crank sensor location change the timeing

i put an engine in a 2004 quest that came out of a maxima i think is what they said...anyway i used the flywheel and oil pan on the engine because as you know the starters are in a dif spot...anyway the owner got an ecm off the internet because he bought this van at an auction and it did not have one and it had to go to des moines nissan to get the security codes cleared and they told me that the timing is way retarded and thats why it won't run...any ideas???
