Growling Noise

I have a 97 pick up, 2 wd, and I am experiencing a growling noise from time to time either when I have engaged the clutch or when I have just disengaged the clutch. So obviously it's clutch related. Does this sound like the release bearings? If so, what can happen if I let it go too long before fixing?

your clutch could become siezed and you could get stuck in the middle of nowhere. [&:]
