Default DTE sensor

The DTE function on my bosses 05 Pathfinder is malfunctioning. His fuel gauge is also dropping to empty intermittently, and usually fluctuates when heavy acceleration is applied. The company we got our Pathfinders from had taken it in when the DTE function started failing. At 1/2 tank, it reads 0, and the fuel gauge starts it's issues. Are they on the same sensor? Where is the sensor located? Is it something a reasonably competent home mechanic can change on his own?
Burnout, I saw you were active when I started to type this. Have you any ideas to share?

Thanks,
Brad

If you look on Ebay, there's a guy sells the dealer workshop manual for 2005 - Pathys for a very cheap price. I got one and they are excellent value. Should help with your problem.
