1990 Skyline GT Electrical weirdness
We recently picked up a 1990 Skyline that has had several performance "enhancements" - various doodads on the console and panel. Frankly I don't know what any of this stuff does, but I suspect that some of it is hooked up "wrong". Here is the problem:
Put the key in, without starting the car, and the rear turn signals work correctly, brake light only works on the left side. Start the car, and the right turn signal stops working, but lights up constantly, dimly. Left "running light" is always on, but nothing happens when you use the brakes. My inital guess is that something is connected in on the wrong line, and is either pulling too much current, or is "bridging" some circuit that shouldn't be, causing the rear light system to malfunction once the car is actually started.
Compounding the puzzlement is that I am not really sure what lights are supposed to do what. (previous owner was some kid who really didn't take much care of the car - which means, naturally, owners manual is long gone (and probably was in Japanese)). There are two circular red lights on each side, with a small square amber in between. I'm running on the assumption that the outer red lights are the "running lights" and that the brake light should light up both inner and outer red lights. Am I right?
I'd like to simply take this to the local Nissan dealer to sort out, but I've heard some horror stories about our local dealership which makes me hesitant to take such an "oddball" case to them. I guess I'm looking for some genius repair guy to straighten it all out for me. But even some initial clues or troubleshooting tips would be welcome.
