Default 91 Max SE/Manual Transmission

I'm trying to refurbish my 1991 max se. First, I must replace the 5 sp. transmission. I've noticed they are hard to find. I recently purchased a nice used engine and I'm debating on buying a used or rebuilt transmission. The tranny that was in the vehicle is shot and the case is busted. It Let me down on a long dark highway and I was told it could not be rebuilt. I've located two used trannys in the 500-600 range. My question is should I fork out $1500 for a rebuilt one or buy the used and take it to a rebuilders shop to have it looked over in case some minor work is needed?

Also I would like to get info on doing a conversion to the bmw e36 headlights and a recommendation on fog lights to match.

I'm a newbie and I appreciate all feedback

Thank You

Default RE: 91 Max SE/Manual Transmission

I'd try to get the cheapest tranny, clean it outside, flush inside, change seals and install. If possible, dig out its history, money back warranty... before buing check the oil plug magnet for -large- metal chips (compare yours). Whatever you choose, its roll dice. I am very sceptic on rebuilds, that just me, b/c of bad experiences... Use full synthetic motor oil.

Theres a e36writeup somewhwre, clic link below to check top left "favorite links"

80k A/T plug
