'97 Maxima wierd starting problem
Hi Guys,
My first post here. I'd appreciate any help. My Maxima seems to start OK when it's cold, but not when it's hot or having been left in the sun. Most of the time, I have to cycle the key through a couple of start motions before the starter engages and turns it over. In other words, the key doesn't engage the starter a few times before it catches. One thing that does seem to help is when I step on the brake and then turn the key, it starts easier. Is it the starter or some start interlock issue? Thanks!

Possibly Worn Ign sw, brake inhibit sw, gear selector sw and/or starter solenoid contacts. Check/clean first batt cables.

Thanks Reiska,
I have it up on blocks now and am doing some additional maintenance work. I will follow your advice and report back what the problem was (I'll hope I'll be able to use the past tense).
Thanks again!

RE: '97 Maxima wierd starting problem
It's finally fixed. It turned out to be the ignition switch. I also replaced the start inhibit relay, but it turned out to be an unnecessary move. I thought for sure it was the inhibit relay, because when I jumpered the two appropriate relay contacts on the socket, with the relay removed, the car started 8 times in a row. After replacing the relay, the problem returned. Well, at least I didn't needlessly replace the starter....
Thanks for the help!

Hey good u found your problem!
The Nissan relays are color coded, 'all blue' are equal etc. They may be swapped at will for troubleshootin purposes; its lego blocks basic DIY troubleshooting by pluckin and swappin same color relays. not for mama as she is colorblind)
